Be the Best version of you

Most of us get fascinated by other people who are exceptionally good at what they do. We go ‘Wow! That guy must be a genius’. The truth is we are all geniuses in our way. You are good at something.

You don’t have to be the best in the whole wide world, you just have to be the best at something and people will stand in awe of you.

Being the best doesn’t just happen by wishing to be the best, you have to put in a lot of effort and practice. According to Robert Greene, author of Mastery, there is no such thing as being born into superior success. Rather, those entrepreneurs, scientists, athletes and artists who rise above the rest in their field, have unyielding focus and work ethic.

To become the best, it is very important to choose an area you would like to be the best in. Most preferably, it should also be something that interests you on a personal level. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying “jack of all trades, master of none”. You don’t want to be that person that is involved with this and that but never really good at anything. While it is always good to know a little something about everything, to actually be the best, you have to define your focus. Choose a ‘trade’ and work on being the best in it. It might be academics, sports, business, etc. Just have a focus.

After choosing a focus (goal), determine to put your best into it. This means learning all there is to learn; gather relevant and important materials and go over them. Don’t just go over them, put whatever you learn into practice.

Practice over and over till it becomes second nature to you. The difference between ordinary people and exceptionally successful people is their exceptional hard work. Also, don’t be afraid to take risks. Experience, they say, is the best teacher. Learn by doing.

In addition, chose a mentor (or tutor) that understands your goal. No man is an island, and you need at least one person that’ll help you achieve your goal. So, chose a mentor that has experience in your chosen field. Try to discover what made that person so great in their field and try to adapt some of their ideas.

Finally, be committed to your focus. It is commitment to a goal that will compel you to give all you have to a particular goal. It is what will motivate you to endure whatever hardship you might encounter along the way. It is the only thing that will stop you from giving up easily.

Remember, excellence is a habit. You have to cultivate it and practice it over and over. Don’t just be contented with getting by or being average. Be the best- you can!
